How to Homeschool in Michigan

In Michigan, there are two options to comply with the home education laws in the state:

Option 1: Homeschool under Michigan’s homeschool statute
There is no notification requirement. Required subjects must be taught, including reading, spelling, math, science, history, civics, literature, writing, and English. 

Option 2: Homeschool as a nonpublic school
Ensure that the instructor has the required qualifications of a teaching certificate, teaching permit, or a bachelor’s degree. Each year, you must provide notification that includes the name and age of each child and other information. There are required subjects that must be taught. 

Lobbying & Advocacy Organizations

Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA)
HSLDA is the nation’s largest homeschool advocacy organization. They protect the rights of homeschoolers in court, advocate for homeschool freedom in state legislatures, and work to advance homeschooling in the public arena. 

Michigan Christian Homeschool Network (MICHN) 
MICHN works to ensure homeschool freedom in the state of Michigan. They offer conferences, communication, and legislative monitoring and lobbying.

Catholic Homeschoolers of Michiana
Greater South Bend, Mishawaka, Elkhart, Plymouth, LaPorte, Niles, Edwardsburg, St. Joseph County, Elkhart County, LaPorte County, Marshall County, Starke County, Cass County, Berrien County, northern Indiana and southwestern Michigan
This homeschool group serves families in the greater South Bend area and in counties in northern Indiana and southwestern Michigan. They offer an email list, gatherings for learning and fun, mutual prayer, mentorship, and social opportunities for kids and families. Catholic Homeschoolers of Michiana Facebook group.

The West Michigan Catholic Homeschooling Community shares resources and plans events and social activities for members. 

Christ the King CTK Catechesis of the Good Shepherd

This program meets once a week at Christ the King parish in Ann Arbor. They serve children ages 3-9.

This homeschool group offers two programs, one a drop-off program in partnership with Oxford Virtual Academy on Tuesdays and a classical Catholic co-op day on Thursdays. This is a vibrant and solidly Catholic community of homeschooling families dedicated to provide opportunities for mothers and children to be supported on their homeschooling journeys. JMJ Catholic Homeschool Group
Kalamazoo, MI
This is an active homeschool community in the Kalamazoo area. They offer support and activities for homeschooling families such as Masses and Adoration, family fun nights, a high school youth group, field trips, feast day celebrations, moms’ nights out, book clubs, park days, and graduation. 

Lansing-Area Catholic Homeschoolers

This is a local Catholic homeschool group for families in the Lansing area. They have events and offer advice and support. 

Sacred Heart Educators
Ann Arbor, MI
This is a Roman Catholic homeschooling support group in the greater Ann Arbor Michigan area. They offer support and information and plan events for member families. 

Saints Cyril and Methodius Parish Homeschool Support Group
Sterling Heights, MI
This homeschool group offers art classes, the John Paul II Home Educators Support Group, and the Sancta Familia Homeschool Support Group. Activities include parent support meetings, field trips, classes, volunteer work, and social opportunities. 

Shrine Parish Homeschool Group
Royal Oak, MI
This group serves families at Shrine Parish in Royal Oak with fellowship and activities for member families. 

St. Anastasia Homeschool Group
Troy, MI
St. Anastasia’s Homeschool Group is a Roman Catholic homeschooling community in Troy, MI. They meet weekly for gym days, field trips, liturgical parties, and park days.

Classically Catholic Memory Co-op
Kalamazoo and Midland/Saginaw, MI
Classically Catholic Memory is a memory work program that is both Catholic and classical in nature. It is designed for children ages 5 through 12, and each year of the program provides 18 weeks of memory work in each subject. CCM is run as a co-op model.

Immaculate Conception Homeschool Group (ICHG)
Lapeer, MI
Immaculate Conception Homeschool Group(ICHG) is a group of lay faithful Roman Catholic parents who view homeschooling as a beautiful way to educate their children and understand that being surrounded with like-minded families only aids in the support of the children’s religious, academic, moral, and social formation. This co-op was created to help parents in teaching non-core classes, based on the Catholic Schoolhouse model, adding a structured supplemental curriculum in a relaxed atmosphere, while also giving students a way to form friendships and have positive social interactions. ICHG accepts families that are currently members of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, those going through the RCIA program, or regular attendees who understand the importance of raising their children in the Catholic Faith. 

LIFE Catholic Homeschool Cooperative
Grand Rapids, MI
The LIFE Catholic Homeschool Cooperative meets at Saint Isidore Catholic Church in Grand Rapids. They offer a once-a-week program for preschool through 12th grade. Students have the opportunity to participate in enrichment activities such as gym and art. 

Servants of the Immaculata Catholic Homeschool Co-op
Southwest Michigan, Kalamazoo, MI
Servants of the Immaculata Catholic Homeschool Co-Operative & Tutoring provides core classes and enrichment opportunities for homeschooling families with students preschool through middle school as well as core classes for students in high school. Participants are obedient to the Magisterium of the Catholic Church and entrusted to Jesus Christ through our Blessed Mother, Mary Immaculate. SOI groups.io forum. 

St. Augustine Catholic Homeschool Cooperative

The St. Augustine Catholic Homeschool Cooperative is a ministry of St. Anne’s Parish in Chassell. They meet weekly for classes in art, science, literature, and philosophy. This co-op offers classes mainly for PreK through elementary aged students.

Catholic Schoolhouse is a supplemental program designed to help homeschool families enrich their educational experience through a flexible approach to learning inspired by classical elements presented in a structure environment. Regina Caeli Detroit
Detroit, MI
Regina Caeli is a homeschool hybrid program offering a combination of in-person classroom learning at at-home homeschool learning. Parents follow the classical education curriculum at home while tutors instruct the students two days a week at the local campus center. There are also opportunities for extracurricular activities and field trips. 

Sacred Heart Academy Classical Homeschool Enrichment
Grand Rapids, MI
Sacred Heart Academy offers Catholic families the opportunity to participate in courses taught by Sacred Heart faculty. These CEC classes meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays, allowing homeschooling families to maintain the freedom and autonomy of homeschooling while still benefitting from the academy community. 

Saint Stephen Catholic School Homeschool Partnership
East Grand Rapids, MI
Saint Stephen School in East Grand Rapids offers a homeschool program for grades 3-8. Students can join full-time students in the same classroom on Wednesdays and Fridays for classes using a Charlotte Mason inspired liberal arts curriculum. Students can also join in for school Mass and field trips. 

Sanctuary Academy of Dewitt
Dewitt, MI
Sanctuary Academy of Dewitt is a Catholic homeschool support program. It is an affiliate of Acton Academy of Austin, Texas. Educational experiences focus on hands-on, real-world learning during the school day. 

St. Augustine’s Classical Homeschool Enrichment Program
Ann Arbor, South Lyon, Temperance, MI
St. Augustine’s is a classical homeschool program that offers in-class learning experiences two to three days a week, with the remaining days dedicated to studies at home. They offer a classical education curriculum based on literature, history, science, math, and writing. They have three campuses: Old St. Patrick Parish in Ann Arbor, St. Joseph Parish in South Lyon, and St. Anthony Parish in Temperance. 

St. Benedict Integrated Homeschool Program
Imlay City, MI
This is a hybrid homeschool program with classes offered weekly at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Imlay City. The program provides two days of on-site directed studies by experienced tutors in a classroom setting, while parents teach and guide the children at home in tandem with the program curriculum on the remaining days. 

St. John Paul II Classical Connect for Homeschoolers
Lincoln Park, MI
St. John Paul II Classical Catholic School partners with parents in their role as the primary educators of their children. Homeschool students in grades K-8 grade are able to join full-time students in the same classroom on Wednesdays for classical curriculum education. Families are also welcome to join the school for Mass, participate in the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) sports teams, and for field trips. 

St. Joseph Classical 
Ypsilanti, MI
St. Joseph Classical is a one day per week homeschool support program at St. Joseph – Ypsilanti for students in grades 1 through 8. Class days begin with Mass and offer classes in science, history, math, religious education, and chess club.

Virtual Conference
June 7-8, 2024

This virtual conference features topics covering homeschool guidance, marriage and family, and character and virtue development. Speakers include Bishop Joseph Strickland, Emily Brown, Bonnie Landry, and more. There will also be a homeschool graduate panel. The Catholic Homeschool Directory is a virtual exhibitors hall. Minnesota Catholic Home Education Conference & Curriculum Fair
St. Paul College, St. Paul, MN
May 31 – June 1, 2024

After a 3-year hiatus, the Minnesota Catholic Home Education and Curriculum Conference is back! This annual conference is one of the largest Catholic homeschooling conferences in the country. Listen to speakers from around the country and meet other homeschoolers from your area. Conference attendees can browse through the vendors hall, go to workshops and talks, and network with other homeschoolers. Keynote Speaker 2023: Pam Barnhill, Host of the Your Morning Basket Podcast

This annual conference is offered to encourage homeschoolers in their vocations as Catholic home educators.
