Catholic Homeschooling in Louisiana

How to Homeschool in Louisiana

In Louisiana, there are two legal options for homeschooling:

Option 1: Homeschool as a home study program
Apply to the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education for approval. This must be renewed annually. You must certify that you will offer a sustained curriculum of quality. Other requirements are to teach for 180 days a year and teach the required subjects, provide evidence of immunizations or a waiver, and include records when applying for renewal.

Option 2: Homeschool as a home-based private school
Provide a written notification of enrollment. You are not able to accept any federal or state funds. Then provide an annual notice of attendance and teach for the required 180 days.

Louisiana families typically provide this independent education through a Nonpublic School Not Seeking State Approval or a Board of Elementary and Secondary Education Approved Home Study Program.
