As May rolls around, we are drawn outdoors and planting a garden is one of those quintessential May activities. But your garden doesn’t have to just be flowers and vegetables. While those are certainly lovely things, you can also bring your faith into your garden space by planning and planting a Mary Garden. This is a wonderful activities for children. The symbolism, the smells, the colors–planting a Mary Garden with your children encourages them to experience devotion to the Blessed Mother in a real and fruitful way.

A Marian garden is a special type of garden dedicated to the Virgin Mary and incorporates some ancient symbols of the Blessed Mother from nature. These gardens are typically filled with flowers, plants, and statues that honor Mary and represent her virtues.

Plant a Marian garden with your children this year! Here are some steps you can follow:

  1. Choose a location: Decide where you want to plant your garden. Marian gardens can be small or large, so choose a space that will fit your needs. This doesn’t have to be a huge garden plot. You can tuck your Mary Garden into your front flower bed, in pots on your patio, or even incorporate the flowers into an indoor bouquet.

  2. Select plants: There are so many flowers and plants that have historical and symbolic connections to the Bless Virgin Mary. These include roses, lilies, and violets. And it’s not just flowers! Many herbs, shrubs, and even trees are associated with her life and virtues, including olive trees and rosemary.

  3. Add statues and art: Select statues or other decorations that represent Mary, such as a statue of the Madonna or a depiction of the Annunciation. Garden plaques, stepping stones, and plaster or cement statues will withstand the weather and provide a shrine-like and prayerful atmosphere to your garden area.

  4. Pray and reflect: Once your garden is planted, use it as a space for prayer and reflection. You and your children can spend time in the garden, meditating on the life of Mary and offering prayers to her. Add a small bench or a couple of comfy outdoor chairs to the space to encourage both you and your children to linger and spend time with Mary in contemplation and prayer.

And since it’s May, why not have a home May crowning for Mary? Your children can plait flowers into a crown for Our Blessed Mother. Sing hymns, say the Rosary, and honor our mother in heaven with this beautiful custom here on Earth.
