How to Homeschool in West Virginia
In West Virginia, there are three legal option to homeschool:
1. Get local school board approval. This option has significant oversight, including location, instruction, and progress reporting. Your request could be denied.
2. Submit a notice of intent too the school board or superintendent. As long as the notification complies with the law, the child is excused from compulsory attendance.Â
3. Homeschool in a learning pod. Notice of intent to join the learning pod is required.Â
In West Virginia, there are stipulated teacher requirements and an assessment requirement. There are no immunization requirements.Â

WVHEA promotes home education in the state of West Virginia through support, information sharing, non-partisan research and analysis of issues affection home education, monitoring the government with respect to home education issues, and serving as a resource for persons desiring to home educate.Â

St. James Homeschoolers
Charles Town, WV
St. James Homeschoolers is a group of lay faithful established to promote homeschooling among Catholic families and to support those families who are engaged in providing their children’s primary education at home. Special events include the First Friday Mass at a local nursing home, participation in the St. James Monthly Children’s Mass, bi-weekly Faith & Fitness activities, field trips, community projects, pro-life activities, seasonal parties, social & family activities, and more. This ministry holds monthly meetings.

Sports for Homeschoolers
Public School Access for Homeschoolers in West Virginia
Homeschooled students who meet the eligibility criteria listed in W. Va. Code § 18-2-25 can participate in interscholastic athletic events and other extracurricular activities at the public secondary school. There are eligibility requirements set forth by the school district and athletic association. Homeschooled students are limited to participation at their resident public school. Â
