How to Homeschool in Pennsylvania

In Pennsylvania, there are four legal options for homeschooling: 

Option 1: Homeschooling under the state statute. 

Option 2: Using a private tutor.

Option 3: Enrolling your child in a satellite of a religious day school. 

Option 4: Enrolling your child in a satellite of a day or boarding school. 

Compulsory school ages in Pennsylvania are 6-18. There are state mandated subjects that must be taught and there are immunization requirements.

Lobbying & Advocacy Organizations

Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA)
HSLDA is the nation’s largest homeschool advocacy organization. They protect the rights of homeschoolers in court, advocate for homeschool freedom in state legislatures, and work to advance homeschooling in the public arena. 

Christian Homeschool Association of Pennsylvania (CHAP)
CHAP is a nonprofit corporation founded to encourage and support families interested in home education. They assist parents in understanding and fulfilling the law’s requirements and provide leadership and direction on issues facing Christian homeschoolers on a national and statewide basis. 

Catholic Homeschoolers of Pennsylvania
This is a state-wide homeschool group that works to connect Catholic homeschoolers across the state of Pennsylvania. They offer events and provide legislative updates on issues related to homeschooling in Pennsylvania.

This group connects Catholic homeschoolers from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland. They share resources, advice, and support. 

Central Susquahana Valley Catholic Homeschoolers
Central Susquahana Valley – Lewisburg, Sunbury, Berwick, Selinsgrove, Milton, Danville, Bloomsburg, Northumberland, Shamokin, Mount Carmel, Mifflinburg
Central Susquahana Valley Catholic Homeschoolers is made up of homeschool families in Central Pennsylvania who strive to grow in virtue and holiness. They believe families need a place to belong and wish to provide families the support they need to raise their families immersed in Catholic culture. This group is committed to following God’s call for their families, especially in homeschooling their children. CSV Catholic Homeschoolers exists to help families connect with each other. They offer homeschooling activities, social gatherings and service projects, and support one another through prayer and friendship.

Lancaster Latin Mass Community of St. Joseph Homeschool Group

Classically Catholic Memory is a memory work program that is both Catholic and classical in nature. It is designed for children ages 5 through 12, and each year of the program provides 18 weeks of memory work in each subject. CCM is run as a co-op model.

JMJ Cooperative
Spring City, PA
JMJ Cooperative provides homeschool families with educational support that is based on the Catholic faith and values. This school model blends the best of homeschool and classroom instruction in a nurturing learning environment. 

Lancaster Area Catholic Home Educators (LACHE)
Lancaster, PA
This group serves as the networking point for Catholic homeschoolers in the Lancaster, PA, area. This co-op provides encouragement and activities to support a variety of Catholic homeschool programs. 

St. John Paul II Co-op
Pittsburgh, PA
The Saint John Paul II Homeschool Co-op helps participating families to jointly pursue academic studies and grow in their faith. The Saint Thomas More Homeschool Cooperative meets twice a week at St. Thomas More Parish in Pottstown.

Catholic Schoolhouse is a supplemental program designed to help homeschool families enrich their educational experience through a flexible approach to learning inspired by classical elements presented in a structure environment. They serve students in grades K-8 and meet once a week during the school year. 

Claritas Classical Academy
Philadelphia, PA
Claritas Classical Academy is a homeschool hybrid program which meets two days per week in the Philadelphia area. They serve students in grades preK through high school. Class subjects include scripture, Latin, English grammar, math, science, geography, history, timeline, writing, and hymns. 

Living Bridges Homeschool Education Program
Norristown, PA
Living Bridges Education Program offers support and classes for Catholic homeschooling families. They have two options for participation: an enrichment program and an academic program. Classes include music, art, gym, drama, and religion. For younger children, there is Catechesis of the Good Shepherd and a preschool class. 

Maria Kaupas Academy
Scranton, PA
Maria Kaupas Academy is a homeschool enrichment program (Lower School) and comprehensive classical education program (Upper School) sponsored by St. Thomas More Catholic Parish in Scranton, Pennsylvania. The academy is dedicated to cultivating the individual, and to reestablishing the Christian tradition by fostering a Christ-centered culture of people in daily awe at the wonders of the world, and who recognize and seek out Truth. Their mission is to offer a God-centered education, rooted in Truth and Beauty, that will prepare students to serve Christ through their families and communities, and which will help them discern their respective vocations.

St. Ambrose Academy Homeschool Hybrid
Pittsburg, PA
Saint Ambrose Academy (SAA) supports homeschooling families through a hybrid homeschooling system. They meet twice weekly on Monday and Wednesday for classes to educate children in a classroom setting. Parents are responsible to continue their education at home on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday as a Catholic hybrid homeschool co-op.

Virtual Conference
June 7-8, 2024

This virtual conference features topics covering homeschool guidance, marriage and family, and character and virtue development. Speakers include Bishop Joseph Strickland, Emily Brown, Bonnie Landry, and more. There will also be a homeschool graduate panel. The Catholic Homeschool Directory is a virtual exhibitors hall.
