How to Homeschool in Georgia

To legally homeschool in Georgia, you should submit an annual declaration of intent, provide the required number of days of instruction, teach the required subjects of mathematics, English, science, social studies, and reading, write annual progress reports, and test your child at least every three years after 3rd grade.  

There is a requirement to ensure that the people teaching your children have the required qualifications of at least a high school diploma or GED. 

Compulsory school ages are 6-16 and notification is required. There are some required teacher qualifications, testing requirements, and state mandated subjects. There are no immunization requirements.

Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA)
HSLDA is the nation’s largest homeschool advocacy organization. They protect the rights of homeschoolers in court, advocate for homeschool freedom in state legislatures, and work to advance homeschooling in the public arena. 

Georgia Home Education Association (GHEA)
Georgia Home Education Association (GHEA) is a statewide, member supported, 501(c)3 non-profit organization that has been serving the needs and protecting the rights of homeschoolers since 1992. GHEA is committed to the advancement of home education and to protecting every family’s right to home educate their children and considers it part of its mission to help families across Georgia involved in this educational choice. Therefore, GHEA serves all homeschoolers, regardless of religious or philosophical beliefs and membership is open to all.

Loretto is a Mary Our Queen ministry where North Georgia Catholic families come together and plan shared events for their children, themselves, and others. Made up of primarily home-school families, Loretto organizes wholesome, family-friendly, and virtue-building activities around our faith affirming the Catholic Church’s time-honored teachings. Through Loretto, Catholic families share resources to provide their children with faith-filled experiences. Loretto reaches out across parish boundaries, but also within the parish, to share our faith and to build a stronger Catholic life in the community. Offerings include informational sessions, resource sharing, family-friendly events around the liturgical calendar, field trips, teen events, mother support, and family events. They often join efforts with Holy Family TORCH to provide our families with more opportunities.

Catholic Schoolhouse is a supplemental program designed to help homeschool families enrich their educational experience through a flexible approach to learning inspired by classical elements presented in a structure environment. They serve students in grades K-8 and meet once a week during the school year. 

Regina Caeli Atlanta
Atlanta, GA
This program offers a blend of classroom instruction and homeschooling for students in preK to 12th grade. Students attend classes twice a week, while parents facilitate their home learning on the remaining days. The program follows a classical education model and integrates Catholic teachings into all subjects. Additionally, students can participate in extracurricular activities and participate in field trips.

Saint Thomas More Academy
St. Aelred Catholic Church, Athens, GA
St. Thomas More Academy is an educational program offering a one or two-day program for students aged 2-13. This group is an apostolate of the parish of Saint Aelred Catholic Church. Class offerings include Scripture and saint studies, drama, literature, composition, history, philosophy, logic, music, art, and nature studies.

St. John Bosco Academy
Cumming, GA
St. John Bosco Academy supports families in educating their children. This is a hybrid program. Students in grades PK4-8 attend classes on campus two days a week. High school students attend three days each week. The remaining days are used for learning at home. 

St. John the Baptist Hybrid School
Kennesaw, GA, Cobb County
St. John the Baptist Hybrid School is an accredited hybrid homeschool program for grades K-12th with on-site classes on Mondays and Wednesdays. They offer Catholic faith formation, language arts, writing, mathematics, science, history, and more. High school students are offered dual enrollment. Extra activities include field day, classroom parties, and other events.

Public School Access for Homeschoolers in Georgia
Homeschool students are eligible to participate in extracurricular activities and interscholastic activities in their districts if certain requirements are met.

Notre Dame Academy Athletics
Duluth, GA
Notre Dame Academy is a Marist Catholic and International Baccalaureate World School located in Duluth, Georgia. The academy is currently offering interscholastic athletic opportunities for students in 6th to 12h grade. Sports offered are football, volleyball, boys and girls cross country, softball, boys and girls basketball, swimming, baseball, boys and girls lacrosse, boys and girls track, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls tennis, and boys and girls golf. The academy is allowed to add a limited number of home school students to athletic teams.
